Economy: Nawaz Sharif's New Challenges

Pakistan's Prime Minister is known more for his business acumen than his political maturity. When he came to power people of Pakistan has attached high hope to his understanding of financial matters but like a good business person his loyalties are attached to his constituency i.e. businessmen. Nearly half a year down the road Pakistan's economy is still wandering with so many obstacles still uncleared. Pakistan's economic problems are understood well and clear by Mr Nawaz Sharif, who recently told Wall Street Journal that Pakistan's defence budget is a big drain on national resources. Perhaps this understanding took him to announce that he want good relations with India, even before taking oath of his office.

Pakistan's public sector has added woes to the ruling government as Railways, WAPDA, Pakistan Steel, Pakistan Postal Services and PIA need regular bailouts because of the rampant corruption and mismanagement. Mr Sharif is yet to address these problems. The lingering circular debt of Power Sector has been transferred to the consumers paying regular bills. So the honest are being asked to pay for the corrupt.
